La gran tarea de inspirar a las mujeres del futuro

A propósito del Día Internacional de la Mujer y la Niña en la Ciencia, aprovecho la oportunidad de celebrar este día como Presidenta de Inspiring Girls Venezuela. Me alegra poder sumarme a la hermosa labor de inspirar y motivar a las niñas y adolescentes, ya que el mundo nos demanda una generación de niñas más seguras, curiosas, valientes y sobre todo con ganas de convertirse en lo que ellas deseen ser. Aunque parece una tarea sencilla motivar a las nuevas generaciones, es una tarea que implica un compromiso que nos incluye a todos: mujeres ,hombres, familias, escuelas y sociedad civil. Hoy tenemos una gran responsabilidad con las niñas y adolescentes del mundo, por esa razón celebro que Inspiring Girls haya llegado a Venezuela.
En un contexto difícil llega la organización a Venezuela, ya hace siete años el país se ubicaba como el segundo con mayor tasa de embarazo precoz. El lugar se mantiene, ya que para el año 2019 la Organización Panamericana de la Salud/Organización Mundial de la Salud (OPS/OMS), Fondo de las Naciones Unidas para la Infancia (UNICEF) y el Fondo de Población de las Naciones Unidas (UNFPA) destacaban que en América del Sur, Bolivia y Venezuela eran los países con las tasas más altas.
Igualmente debido a la crisis humanitaria que enfrenta el país, problemas sociales como la deserción escolar complican la situación. Un estudio que se realiza a nivel nacional en Venezuela, la Encuesta Nacional de Condiciones de Vida (ENCOVI) reveló que entre los años 2019-2020 se observó una irregularidad en la asistencia escolar en donde 13% de niños, niñas y adolescentes no asistían a clases, muchas veces, esas razones de inasistencia fueron la escasez de agua, los apagones, la falta de comida en el hogar, fallas del transporte o ausencia de los docentes.
La situación no es fácil. No obstante, todo no puede ser malas noticias. La llegada de Inspiring Girls a mi país representa un desafío tomando en cuenta el contexto social pero al mismo tiempo es una oportunidad para empezar a trabajar en la construcción de soluciones y buenas noticias. Creo que el trabajo que realizaremos durante este 2021 será crucial y de gran impacto para la generación futura de niñas venezolanas. Nuestro deseo es poder inspirarlas y motivarlas a seguir sus sueños, al mismo tiempo creemos que las sesiones con mujeres referentes será de gran ayuda. Afortunadamente, hay mujeres venezolanas dentro y fuera del país, desempeñándose de manera exitosa en diferentes áreas profesionales y disciplinas deportivas que son un gran referente.
Ya lo decía la ex presidenta de Costa, Laura Chinchilla en su artículo en The New York Times, Las mujeres volveremos a gobernar América Latina, acerca del efecto que generó el tener a una mujer en la Presidencia de Costa Rica “muchas niñas habían presentado sus candidaturas para ser las presidentas. Durante los siguientes cuatro años una escena se repitió a menudo a donde iba: niñas y colegialas me decían que cuando fueran grandes ellas también serían presidentas”. Este es el efecto que queremos lograr que las niñas, que sepan que pueden llegar lejos, que puedan atreverse a explorar el mundo, porque para ellas hay un abanico de oportunidades y posibilidades.
¡Me siento motivada porque gracias al apoyo de Inspiring Girls, vamos a ayudar a la gran tarea de inspirar a las mujeres del futuro en Venezuela! Estoy segura que la iniciativa va inspirar no solo a niñas y mujeres sino a todo un país que necesitaba esta buena noticia.
The task of inspiring the women of the future

On the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, I am able to celebrate it as the Country Chair of the newly established Inspiring Girls Venezuela. I am very pleased to be joining the wonderful work of inspiring and motivating young girls at a time when the world needs to encourage the next generation of girls to be more confident, curious, courageous and above all eager to become what they want to be. Although it may seem like a simple task to inspire the next generation of women, it is a task that involves a commitment that includes all of us: women, men, families, schools and civil society. Today we have a great responsibility towards the girls of the world, which is why I am delighted that Inspiring Girls has arrived in Venezuela.
The context of establishing in Venezuela has been a challenging one, seven years ago the country was ranked as having the second with the second highest rate of teenage pregnancy and there have not been many changes since. In 2019 the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) highlighted that in South America, Bolivia and Venezuela were the countries with the highest rates of teenage pregnancy.
The country is also facing a humanitarian crisis and social problems such as school dropouts complicate the situation. A nationwide study in Venezuela, the National Survey of Living Conditions (ENCOVI) revealed that between 2019-2020 there was an irregularity in school attendance where 13% of children and teenagers did not attend classes and often the reasons for non-attendance were water shortages, power outages, lack of food at home, transport failures or the absence of teachers.
The situation is not easy however there is light at the end of the tunnel. The establishment of Inspiring Girls in Venezuela represents a challenge considering the social context but at the same time it is an opportunity to start working on building solutions. I believe that the work we will do during this 2021 will be crucial and of great impact for the future generations of Venezuelan girls. Our wish is to be able to inspire and motivate them to follow their dreams, and we believe that the sessions with women role models will be an excellent place to start. We are also very privileged that there are exceptional Venezuelan women role models inside and outside the country who will be able to share their experiences and stories with the young girls we work with.
As the former president of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla, said in her article in The New York Times, Women Will Rule Latin America Again, about the effect of having a woman in the Costa Rican presidency, "many girls had applied to become president. During the next four years a scene was repeated often wherever I went: little girls and schoolgirls told me that when they grew up they would be president too.” This is the effect we want to have on the girls, to let them know that they can go far, that they can dare to explore the world because for them there is a range of opportunities and possibilities.
I feel motivated because thanks to the support of Inspiring Girls, we are going to help the great task of inspiring the women of the future in Venezuela! I am sure that the initiative will inspire not only girls and women but a whole country that needs this good news.
