Interview with Marta Pérez Dorao, Chair Inspiring Girls Spain

Name and profession:

Marta Pérez Dorao, lawyer and business woman and Chair Inspiring Girls Spain

What is the best thing of your current job?

I control my agenda. It permits me to do a number of different tasks that interest me, like legal questions or institutional relationships. I interact with many interesting people.

What was your first job?

I was attorney at law and defended lots of different cases

As a kid, what was your dream job?

I liked both, arts and creativity, and business. I do not think I dreamt of any particular job… all I remember is that I wanted to travel a lot and see many different countries, speak different languages… and my job as General Counsel of a multinational software company allowed me to do that.

Did you set yourself a professional path to follow?

No. I think this is a great problem of women: we do not plan our professional future.

Did you have a role model growing up?

I liked all women that were “the boss”...

What is the best piece of advice you were given?

Perfect is enemy of possible. Keep going.

Who inspires you now?

My daughters. I want a better world for them.

What would you tell a girl who doesn’t know what to do in the future?

Explore and keep open your choices. There are lots of professional careers that did not exist 5 years ago, and will be the most demanded in the future.

Define success.

Being happy with yourself. You are successful when you are comfortable in your skin, and you have stopped wishing to be someone else. When you are in the place you want to be doing the things you want to do.

What do you think is necessary to be able to say you have succeeded?

Satisfactory emotional relationship. You have succeeded if you have people that you love around you, and you like what you do. You have succeeded if you have the feeling that you have developed your talents, no matter what job you are in.
